Empowering Youth Through Skills and Enterprise Development

Turning Potential into Opportunity

Youth unemployment remains one of the greatest challenges facing Moroto Municipality and the wider Karamoja region. Despite their energy, creativity, and determination, many young people face limited access to employment opportunities, vocational skills, startup capital, and business mentorship.

Without meaningful opportunities, many young people are vulnerable to poverty, idleness, dependency, and social challenges that limit their ability to contribute positively to their communities.

Recognizing this challenge, Hon. Francis Lorika Adome, Founder and CEO of Adome Lorika Foundation, has consistently championed youth empowerment as a cornerstone of sustainable community development. Through various community-based initiatives, hundreds of young people have been equipped with practical skills, entrepreneurship training, business support, and livelihood opportunities that enable them to become self-reliant and productive citizens.

The Foundation’s approach goes beyond providing short-term assistance. It focuses on building confidence, developing skills, nurturing innovation, and creating pathways for long-term economic independence.

Supporting Youth to Build Sustainable Livelihoods

One of the Foundation’s most impactful interventions involved supporting youth groups with income-generating projects and enterprise development initiatives.

Youth groups from communities including Nakol, Katanga Bridge, Labour Line, Singila, and Kambizi received equipment, training, and mentorship to establish small businesses and community enterprises. These initiatives enabled many young people to transition from unemployment to entrepreneurship.

Participants received training in:

  • Business management and entrepreneurship.
  • Financial literacy and savings.
  • Customer care and marketing.
  • Leadership and teamwork.
  • Record keeping and accountability.
  • Enterprise sustainability and growth.

For many beneficiaries, this was their first opportunity to receive structured support for starting and managing a business.

A Youth Beneficiary’s Story

“Before receiving support, I spent most of my days searching for casual work. Some days I earned nothing and could not contribute to my family’s needs. Through the training and support we received, our youth group was able to start a small enterprise that now generates income. Today I can support myself and help my younger siblings stay in school. I now believe that my future is in my hands.” Youth Beneficiary, Moroto Municipality

Creating Jobs and Restoring Dignity

The impact of these interventions extends beyond individual beneficiaries. Many youth-led enterprises have created additional opportunities for other young people within their communities.

As businesses grew, beneficiaries began employing fellow youth, strengthening local economies and promoting a culture of hard work and innovation.

The support also helped restore dignity and self-confidence among young people who had previously felt excluded from economic opportunities.

Testimony from a Community Leader

“Many young people in our community had lost hope because jobs were difficult to find. After receiving support and training, we have seen youth groups become more organized, responsible, and productive. Some are now running successful businesses and serving as role models for others.” Community Leader, Moroto Municipality

Investing in Skills for Long-Term Success

The Foundation understands that economic empowerment begins with knowledge and skills. Through vocational training and capacity-building programs, young people have gained practical abilities that can generate income for years to come.

The programs encourage innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurship while helping youth identify opportunities within their own communities.

Many beneficiaries have gone on to:

  • Start small businesses.
  • Join savings and investment groups.
  • Support their families financially.
  • Pay school fees for siblings and dependents.
  • Participate actively in community development activities.
A Young Woman’s Journey

“As a young woman, I always wanted to start a business but lacked the knowledge and confidence. The entrepreneurship training changed my mindset completely. Today I operate a small business that supports my family. I am proud that I can earn my own income and make decisions about my future.” Female Youth Entrepreneur

Community Impact

The youth empowerment initiatives have generated positive ripple effects throughout the community by:

  • Reducing youth unemployment and dependency.
  • Increasing household incomes.
  • Promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Strengthening local economic activity.
  • Enhancing financial literacy among young people.
  • Encouraging responsible leadership and civic participation.
  • Creating positive role models for future generations.

Looking Ahead

Adome Lorika Foundation remains committed to expanding opportunities for youth across Moroto Municipality and the wider Karamoja region. The Foundation continues to seek partnerships with development agencies, donors, government institutions, and private sector actors to scale up youth empowerment programs and reach even more young people.

We believe that when young people are empowered with skills, opportunities, and hope, they become powerful agents of change within their families, communities, and nation.

As one beneficiary expressed:

“The support did not simply give us equipment or training. It gave us confidence, purpose, and the belief that we can build a better future for ourselves and our community.”

By investing in youth today, we are investing in a stronger, more prosperous, and more resilient Karamoja tomorrow.
